The threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza is a global concern. Experts expect this avian influenza or "bird flu" to reach the United States (or San Diego) in the coming months. It will occur in wild birds or domestic poultry. When this happens, this will not mean that there is an influenza pandemic in humans. This will mean, however, that the avian (bird) flu is present in the U.S. or San Diego in the nation's wild birds, with the potential to be seen in the domestic poultry. Those people who directly handle birds infected with the H5N1 virus are at the greatest risk for getting the disease.

As of August 4, 2006, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is now stating that there has been human infection/death associated with wild swans in Azerbaijan. Previously, there have been no reported cases of human transmission from wild birds.
